Module 2
Compare/Contrast the experience of the Black Death as Boccaccio describes it in the introduction with your experience of the pandemic we are living through today.
Comparison
Both the Black Plague and COVID have been illnesses that have made a huge mark in history. Both the Plague and COVID have changed the way people interact and live. It has distanced each and every one of us to focus on our inner selves. Reflection, insight, and self-analysis have taught both time periods to assess and determine what factors in life are most important.
Contrast
Identifies today helped narrow down the transmittal of COVID as opposed to the period of the Black Plague which had no answers to the spread and what caused it. Modern medicine helped identify major factors early on for societies to make quick and drastic changes to saves lives. In both pandemics, close proximity is one of the culprits aiding the spread but a worldwide standard health practice has helped to curb catastrophic deaths that wiped out entire villages, towns, and even cities.
and b) Summarize the two stories you chose and explain what insight into early modern life you gained by reading them.
Novel 4
In this novel, it speaks of a young monk who struggled with his carnal urges eventually breaking his vow of celibacy with a young maiden who was wandering in the countryside near the monastery. This young monk laid with this young lady in his cell (room) in the monastery and was discovered by the Abbot (lead fo the monastery). The young monk being convinced thought that he was discovered and locked away the young lady as a lure for the Abbot to follow suit in the same behavior, which he did. The trap worked, the Abbot was just as guilty as the monk. The monk was punished but after serving a short period of time for his sin, the Abbot released him after the monk pronounced that basically, this issue was never to be spoken of again but that this behavior would be beneficial to their carnal cravings to continue in secret.
Corruption is a timeless trait. Manipulation and self-centeredness was a way to control your position and attract your desires. This behavior of quilting someone to do what you just did seems to play out in time after time. Seems like lust has been and still reigns supreme.
Novel 5
In Novel 5, the story of the King of France who was a womanizing King had planned a trip to Genoa. He was also aware of a household along the route that had the wife of a nobleman who was going to be alone during his travels. The Marchioness of Monferrato was the wife and member of the royal court of France was aware of the King's prowess and had planned away to deter the King from lying with her. She had ordered that many heds were to be cooked for a banquet when the King arrives. Her intention was to overwhelm the king with as many prepared hens to overwhelm him and distract him from his plan to lie with her. Suttle gestures and banter curbed the King from obtaining his prize of conquest.
An intelligent woman is always able to outwit a man seeking lustful actions by distracting him from his goal by maintaining he distance and teach him the flaws of his actions with examples.
